Canada’s tourism sector proved its resilience in 2025, once again establishing itself as one of the country’s most impactful economic engines. In addition to a record-breaking summer for tourism, the industry’s GDP grew by 2.5%, outpacing Canada’s overall economy, which grew by 1.7%. It’s a sign that people are still choosing to visit, explore, and spend time in Canada, even as global economic pressures weigh on other industries.
Domestic travellers spent $105.6 billion in 2025, accounting for three-quarters of all tourism spending in Canada, while international visitors added $34.9 billion. Overnight domestic trips also saw an increase of 1.6%, up to $107.3 million.
One in 10 Canadian Jobs Relies on Tourism
Canada's tourism success hasn't happened by accident. It’s the result of sustained investment paying off. The sector is powered by 280,000 businesses and more than 70 industries from coast to coast to coast, and it continues to deliver outsized returns: one in 10 jobs in Canada relies on tourism, and in 2025 alone, the sector supported 687,800 direct jobs. Few industries convert investment into jobs, spending, and economic activity as quickly as tourism does. Tourism is one of the top service exports in Canada. Every purchase made by international visitors while in Canada, including hotel stays, guided tours, meals, transportation, and locally made products, added up to 14.5% of Canada's total service exports in 2025.
It's a clear signal: dollars invested in tourism don't sit idle, they circulate back into communities and businesses almost immediately, underscoring just how much value visitors bring to Canada's economy.
Tourism exports are projected to contribute 9-10% (up to $30 billion) toward Canada’s goal of securing an additional $300 billion in non-US exports by 2035.
